One additional offshoot of the lack of social bonds, social contracts, basic decency, healthcare or living standards — we live in a society where we frown upon, and actively and aggressively discourage, people’s rights to miss work to protest politically. We don’t protest because we need to keep our jobs and keep the system running. We don’t protest because should be address larger concerns, the companies will fill our old slots with new blood that will show up every day. And with stagnant wages and no universal healthcare, many of us are living too close to the margins to afford to take that risk … then again, we may all be living too close to the margins to *not* afford to take that risk.
