I loved this. I’ve also found that “how” you use social media somewhat dictates what you get out of it.
I stopped “reading” Twitter, except my mentions. It’s helped me mellow out my outrage and profound sadness.
I limit who I follow on IG to people I personally know who also post pretty pictures. It makes it feel wholesome and positive and beautiful. I post similarly pretty pictures of places I go. (I don’t post selfies because, candidly, I ain’t all that much to look at. But skylines and concerts are!)
And Facebook, I’ve largely abandoned, except to post abbreviated versions of things I later workshop and turn into essays. (It’s a beta testing environment for my writing.) I also use it to text people who’s numbers I don’t have (yet).
That seems to have done the trick for me. Though everyone’s mileage varies.
